Updating Win 8

Hello,

I've been trying to update my GF's laptop for a week now. It came back from Asus with Windows re-installed but not updated (still on 8) hence why I need to bring it up to date. Thing is when I install the 130 (about) updates, it gives me an error when configurating Windows and brings it back to what it was before. I've been trying to install updates three by three through Windows Update but it still installs other updates that were downloaded while I was selecting the updates to install, and giving me the error. Windows Update troubleshooter fixed error 0x80070490 (Windows Update database) and some components from Windows update. That didn't change a thing :/

I'm thinking of re-installing Win 8 but this is an OEM version, do you guys know where I can find the ISO and put it on a USB?

Also do you have any idea what is wrong here?

Go into the settings and disable automatic updates. Then update manually. I always do that on new builds and then change the setting to automatic when everything is updated. There should be a recovery partition on it to reinstall or even a recovery cd program to burn the cd's. We won't know whats wrong until we find out what update(s) is causing the issue.

Well before I got your answer I tried restoring to a previous point, went as far as possible and let it do its job while I was at the univ. Came back to a blue screen because it had crashed and was proposing to either restore to a previous point or cancel. Both lead to the Asus welcome message and nothing happens... I'm almost thinking about buying another key and re-install everything without it being OEM. Would that work?

Well I was thinking of buying a 8.1 key and using that bootable usb tutorial and just do a clean install. No more OEM or Asus crap.

If you are willing to spend money on another license then yeah it will work. But its a lot of money. Can't understand why the asus recovery didn't work.

I don't know either, it kinda screwed the whole installation, I can't pass the Asus screen. I guess I'll just buy another key...

You mean the asus boot screen? Check to make sure the hard drive is good. Most of the time when you can't get past the oem boot screen its a hard drive failure.
I need to find a bootable diagnostic tool then, any recomendation?

Does the laptop have a cd drive? If not, you can always put the hdd in desktop system that has a cd drive and run it that way.
