Upgrade CPU or GPU?

I want to upgrade my CPU i7 920 to i5-6600K ($270). I would have to buy new parts.

Casing: Corsair 450D = $120
Motherboard: ASUS Z170 = $120
RAM: 2x4GB DDR4 2133 = $50
Heat Sink: 212 EVO = $30
That would be around $600

Now my question is which should I upgrade first, my CPU or the GPU AMD HD 7970 to AMD R9 Fury-X ($570)? This is purely for gaming. I will buy one now. Either way I will upgrade both but I will buy the other later, maybe after 6 months.

Also, did I miss anything to upgrade my CPU?

What is the most demanding game you play? Are you sure you really need the fury x? At this point upgrade video card first and then upgrade rest of system.

As above it'd probably depend on the game.

Do you have any overclock on the 920?

I'm not really upgrading for a specific game, more like future game release. Something like Star Citizen or Total War games. I just thought that recent games are starting to get more demanding.

I can play MGSV on medium to high with some fps drop but I like to play the games I bought to the fullest settings with stable fps, and I sure don't want to play them on the lowest setting though. And also, I think my processor is too old that it's affecting the fps, I've been using it for almost 7 years, so I want to upgrade it.

There's one game that I'm currently playing and I'm quite hooked into it because of how deep it is. It's called From the Depths, the graphics may not look that much but my fps drops really low when I build large and many objects. I just thought it might be CPU consuming but it could also be GPU consuming, I'm not sure.

And no, I don't have any overclock on the 920, still 2.67GHz. Overclocking sounds risky.

If done with caution, overclocking is quite safe. There are many safety instructions.
Generally I wouldn't recommend people with just about any i5 or i7 to upgrade, unless it's a really specific purpose.
