I just bought a HP DV7-4173us laptop and was woundering if i can upgrade the cpu. Right now it has a AMD Phenom II X4 N950 but only putting out 2.1Ghz.
i'm looking to get somewhere around 2.8 to 3.0 Ghz. Any ideas? I've looked around on website for days with no solutions....

1: You're already running a quad core. It can multi-task much better than other processors.
2: Clock speed isn't the same with dual and quad core processors like it was back with single Pentium 4's.
3: It's hard and expensive to upgrade a laptop CPU to something that high. The motherboard has to support the processor. Plus, I don't even think they make laptop processors that run at that speed.

With laptops, you are basically stuck with the processor it has. You should have done your homework before buying. Is it possible to return it and get a different one?

Is it possible to over clock it. What i want to do is run a couple games on it. One of them requires the following

Memory: 2GB (Windows XP) or 3GB (Vista or Windows 7)
Processor: 3 Ghz P4 Intel or AMD equivalent processor
Video card: Geforce 8800GT or ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 256MB ram (Shader model 3.0)
Hard disc space: 3.5GB
Drive: 4x PC DVD-ROM
Input controllers: Mouse with scroll wheel
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Controller: Optional controller support DirectX 9.0c compatible

Do you think this computer can handle it or am i just wasting my time?

You processor s fine for that game remember this is a QUAD CORE here. It's 2.1 ghz per core. I don't know about the other requirements because I don't know the specs of your computer.

No. Manufacturers lock the BIOS and don't have advanced options to overclock so that people don't overclock and fry their machine.

Video card is a ATI Radeon Mobility 4250 HD @ 125MB. Is it possible to get more memory out of it? I know it is tied into the mother Board and can not be upgraded.

There should be a setting in the bios where you can regulate how much memory the onboard video uses up to its max. So if you are at the max settigns now, there is no way to get more out of it.
