Upgrade current or build new ?

Hi everyone,

New to the forum, but figured I should find helpful info on here :)

Here's my situation. I currently have an "old" AW, and am looking to get better performances. I'm looking to spend under 1K, ideally in the 500-800 range would be great.

My needs are 3D related work, which I can still run without issues but I can feel getting slower with every new version/software. I also use my computer for gaming, and it's getting pretty outdated. Ideally I'd like to run something like GTAV on high to ultra settings without trouble.

Not sure what would be the best, upgrade some components and build on what I already have as I know I have a fairly easily upgradable base, but am not sure how outdated it actually is or not, or build a new computer and have a nice machine that's fully up to date.

Would love to have some advice,

My current config is the following :

Alienware Aurora,

i7 930 (82.8GhZ)
9Go Ram
AMD Radeon 5800

I'm assuming you game at 1080p?


I think your biggest upgrade without going with a full new build would be to grab a PSU and a GTX 1070. You'll probably get more out of that than going with a completely new system from scratch.

Yes, 1080p for now, might upgrade to dual display later, but I don't think I'll move to a 4k setup anytime soon.

So new graphic card, and a psu ? Sorry if that's a silly question, but why would I need a new power supply ? Can't I use the one I already have ? I had no idea that this could generate a big perf. improvement.

Also, wouldn't some additional Ram be helpful for the gaming as well as the 3D aspect ?

I'm running standard HDD, and have heard lot of different stuff about ssd .. Would that be worth looking into, or is it a lot of $$ for a small perf increase ?

Is that overclocked at all?

It's kind of at the edge of jumping ship to another platform. A PSU and 1060 or 1070 would be a decent jump, you can always transplant them both into a platform upgrade down the line.
 
Nope, no overclocking on it at the moment.
So basically what you're saying is that I'm at the limit between upgrading or switching to a whole new platform right ? (Sorry, English is not my 1st language, so just want to double check).
If I was to go with a new build, would the price range I mentioned be realistic to get me where I'd like ?

Regarding the potential upgrade going with a GTX 1080 and a new PSU : would you have some pointers on what to look for and pay attention to when looking for a PSU ? Not super familiar with these, so not really sure how to compare them ...
