I want to upgrade from my 7800 gt to a Geforce gts 250 1 gb. Do you think that would be a good upgrade or any other cards for around 175$. Thanks

the gts 250 is a ripoff, you can get the gtx 260 for 20 dollars more

I would agree that the GTS 250 at $175 is high. Since the GTS 250 is pretty much a re-branded 9800 GTX+, you should be able to get one for similar prices. I have seen them listed from $130 to $180. Prices are still settling on these units. You can get the GTX 260 (216 shader version) for just a little more if you shop around.

The recommendation for the Radeon HD 4870 is a good option as well.

I'm thinking that the 260 is the best one put here, but just a heads up, if you choose something else, steer well clear of asus video cards.

Asus make awesome motherboards but their graphics cards are frankly terrible. I am kicking myself now for getting 2 asus 8600GT silent's and not the 8600GT fatal1ty silent's, could have got kick ass better performance and only a little more cost, an extra £10 or so.

Also Nvidia has always been known for superior driver support.

Good point. Nvidia tends to fix (and break) things more often. They are very good at pushing out frequent driver updates. That is one of the reasons I have stuck with them.

Nvidia also has decent (if proprietary) driver support in Linux for what it's worth.

It will also depend on your resolution you are running and your psu. These two factors will determine if it is worth it and whether you can repsectively.

i wouldnt factor in shipping for your decision unless its a really tight budget, thats like 7 bucks, big whoop. if a decent card has free shipping, and a slightly better card doesnt, might as well get the slightly better card

all come with call of duty, world at war. thats a 50 dollar game.

also, the gtx260/216 for the performance gain in the extra 40 or so bucks is well worth it. pretty big gain actually, they beat the 1 gig 4870's in almost all tests. and most come with far cry 2, a few with call of duty and an evga with mirror's edge, all great games
