upgrade key for windows install

I'm receiving all my components this week and want to have my build running by next Sunday.

I'm eligible through school to receive an upgrade key code for either Win7 Ultimate or Win8.1 for $9.75 USD.

Is it possible for me to use a "trial" or otherwise unactivated version of Win7 to upgrade using the purchased key code?

Will windows ask me to activate win7, let's say, in order to upgrade to 8.1 with the purchased key? :confused:

Worst case I'll just purchase the $69.99 Win8.1 Pro (for students) disk from Microsoft Store
 
Nvm. Did some research and it wouldn't work. I go Win8.1 for $20 from my mom's coworker's husband who works for MS
 
No sir, but my neighbor has the disk. It's all good though. Got a legal copy for double the price of the upgrade disk. Thought this thread was also pushing the rules a bit...
