Upgrade my G-Card or the whole system?

Hello!

Ok so I have the following system:

AMD X2 4600 / 2GB RAM / GeForce 9600GT 512MB

I'm playing GTA4 and it just doesnt feel right - its playable and looks nice but its not 'smooth' (best way to explain it)

I was thinking of spending some cash on a new graphics card, going up to something like 1GB with higher, faster specs. Question is, will this speed up the game or will i be wasting my money??

Cheers,

Sav

Have you tried lowering the settings in the game? You have enough RAM, and you enough gfx memory also, and a 1gb vid memory would only help at higher resolutions...try lowering your gfx settings.

i have the Q6600, the asus 9600gt and 2gb ram. i play gta 4 on 1280x1024. aside from the occasional lags where there is a lot of traffic, the game is very smooth. like Vizy93 said, you could try lowering your setting. ;)

i think its both your processor and gfx card thats the bottleneck, have you tried overclocking it?

also are you running Vista on that system with 2gb of ram? that might be causing lag aswell.

Thanks for the replies

Im running XP at the moment.

The thing is, i want this game to look great and would love to have the settings up nice and high.

Been looking at the new GTX 260 from Nvidia but i have a feeling my processor will bottleneck it up???

Might just build a brand new system, phenom quad core, raptor drives, GTX280, DDR3 etc - that would be sweet!

Or - what if i just get an 8800GTX?The specs are much higher than my current Card (9600)?

Just had another thought - would it be wise to buy another motherboard that has sli capability (£50?) then another 9600gt (£75 currently), which would give me sli power and opportunity to upgrade processor and ram in the future (think my current ram is 667 - could get a board that supports 667 up to 1066 / my current motherboard supports up to the amd x2 5000, so a new m/b with higher spec could handle more in the future)

?
