Upgrade my Win98SE to XP or not?

I just found after buying an HP camera that I am unable to download pictures to my 98SE without an update to my chipset. It started me thinking ---- is my 98SE a good stable operating system enough to keep indefinitely? Or are the software companies out there (along with MS) now catering more for XP and the like. And is XP more stable now than it was a year or 2 back? (enough for me to get on with after having 98SE for several years?)
Would like some opinions before I make any rash decisions!!

If you use the Internet you might want to consider upgrading to XP because they only plan to keep bringing out security updates until the 26th of June 2006
Plus I would consider upgrading to XP it is alot more stable than it used to be

Upgrading to XP or staying with 98SE

OK Hellbreather,
Yes I thought that xp appears to be a little more stable after being available for a while now.....but still would like some more comment. 98SE has done me proud over the years of running the Net for all kinds of reasons however, so am still a little hesitant about leaving it behind mainly because of its stability.
Thanks again.

An update to your chipset? Are you sure?
If your system can take it (XP requires a bit of memory and disk space), I would recommend using XP. It takes a little getting used to, but overall it is better. It doesn't lock up the entire system if one program crashes, its easier to setup networks and such, drivers/support for lots of peripherals. I was skeptical at first, but after a little getting used to (and changine everything to classic view) I would never go back to Win98.

I find both windows 2000 and windows xp which was built on the NT arctecture much more stable then windows 98. The only problem with XP is it runs very slow if you dont have enough ram. I would not recommend upgrading to xp if you have less then 256 ram. Otherwise I think you find windows xp more stable after you get use to it.

Yes it takes about 256MB RAM to actually run Windows XP, but if you dont have 256MB of RAM you can still use Windows XP in classic mode. My friend used Windows XP in classic mode has less the 256 RAM and it worked fine.
Still I would suggest having 256MB RAM or else lol

after a little getting used to
Thats the first thing I think that comes to mind. I started using it after Windows 2000 and dind't like it much, but that was in the past. It has a lot of features that easy installations and yeah setup for simple hardware takes seconds. However I would recommend the professional version. When the say experience they mean experience. I like XP Pro a lot more networking and security features are more advanced. ;)

Thanks to all!
Sounds like XP could be a good possibility! However, another thought came to mind in regards to the camera. I could just get a card reader instead of installing more HP software (which goes everywhere) and get any pix from that. An easy way out there!
However, the idea of a new mother board comes to mind as well which could stop a few problems occuring I suppose.
I already have 496 mb of RAM, my processor speed is 600 mb with a 40gb hard disk (31gb free at the moment). It is an AMD(Athlon) XP 2600+ and it hums along quite nicely at the moment. I sometimes think that my Diskeeper operating in the background takes away a bit of rubbish though.
So with a new mother board, possibly a card reader as well, this old 98SE might go on and on.

So why don't you try to install Win XP on another partition and keep both operating systems on your PC and use both for some time till you decide if you wanna switch to XP or continue using 98SE ? I see this as a nice solution to your case, you will lose nothing, except sometime installing the WinXP and that's it.

Thanks for that info Narafa, I shall certainly consider that option it sounds a good idea! At present I am in the process of installing a floppy/card reader drive so no need to worry about extra software installed re the HP camera, plus a pci board with an upgrade to 2.0 usb. I have the 'cube' cpu system which is quite a nice little cpu about 8inches high all contained so will use an external modem thence ready to go broadband as well. With the cube having an internal modem there would no room for broadband, so this all will work quite well. But the partitioned xp might be a good idea as well. Thanks again,

Actually narafa I didn't think of that, that sounds like a very good idea then if he doesn't like XP he can go back to 98 hooray for being able to create more than one partition lol :D
