Upgrade or OEM?

OK, so I just got to a point on using the computer, but it will not let me load. My HDD has all info from the old computer and is all mest up. It was a Compaq and and now my computer has no original parts. Now I'm thinking that's its the OS. The one on the HDD is Compaq version of XP, so can I just get an upgrade to make it work as if it was never just for one computer? :confused: And plus when I put in the OS, will it format my HDD??? Because that would NOT be good.
 
well an upgrade version is for installing windows xp on a computer that has say windows 98, an oem version is the type you'd find comming with a prebuilt computer. Either should work, although i think oem versions are non transferable but i'm not sure. Anyway with either version you should be able to do a repair install which would probably fix your problem without loosing any of your information.
