upgrade to a new card

I'm considering upgrading to a new video card to run FSX smoothly. Maybe something in the $300 range.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Yes, It should be.
I don't know how familiar you might be with running FSX, but right after FSX finishes loading all the weather, terrain, and such, the screen goes dark, I have sound but no video. I'm just assuming it's the card.
To be honest with you, I might of messed something up when I upgrade the driver last night. Now i have the blank screen.

Changing your video card should be your last resort if that's the issue. The card should run it fine. Roll back your drivers or reinstall FSX. If it happened after the driver change, I'm almost certain that's the issue.

I thought about rolling back the drivers but that tab is greyed-out. 'DeviceManager' says my drivers are up to date.

What would happen if I hit the uninstall driver tab and reloaded the current driver from AMD's web-site?

Just go to AMD's website and download and install the drivers you had before and it should just overwrite the new ones. That's what I've done before with no issues.

That would be a good ideal for finding out if your drivers are faulty. I woud definitely try uninstalling the drivers and downloading a new set before I'd change that card. I'm in the market to buy a 6970 myself for $200. I'm hoping it's a great deal. Anyways, do that and let us know how it goes. If all else fells, try the last drivers you had that worked well. Or downlod the 12.10 drivers

That is true. Now doing it that way does work and it is easier than the way I said do it :)

Also, FSX is a CPU limited game, not GPU, so any performance increases will be got by overclocking that CPU (if its a K) or upgrading.

OK, I've installed a half dozen of thr earlier drivers the last one being the latest 12.10 with no results.

What's next, a re-install of FSX?

Stupid question, did I need to un-install the old driver before installing a later one,or is that done by just installing a nother later version?

I think you can just reinstall over. In some cases it's a good idea to do a fresh install but I think if the versions are fairly similar it's fine to just install over it. Do you have another card you can try it with? Also google the card and FSX issues and see if you can find any responses. I'm sure you can't be the only one that has the problem, especially if it's only that game.

Uinstall the driver using the standard method.
Restart
Use DriverSweeper to remove all ATi driver instances
Restart
Check again with DriverSweeper
Download and install latest ATi driver for your card and operating system

I've run DriverSweeper and loaded FSX. I fired up and so far is running as it's supposed to be. This evening I'll do a flight for at least an hour to see how it goes. I'm expecting that it will be fine.

Now is there anything that I'll need to change in the Catalyst Control Center or does anyone that has FSX could give me any suggestions on what my settings should be in the CCC.

This is about the 3rd time I've come to this forum with issues and everyone has always been helpful.

Thank you

Is that always completely necessary? I've just reinstalled drivers over each other and AMD handles it just fine.
