Upgrade to win 7 from vista vs clean install

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a question about installing windows 7. I bought the upgrade electronically and currently have vista 64 bit. I know I don't have to do a clean install like an XP user but I am considering doing it. My current computer has endless pop ups from all kind of wierd web sites, my internet explorer crashes every 2 seconds because of something called "data execution prevention" and I have not been able to install almost anything due to an error regarding the "windows installer". I've suffered every possible vista issue and therefore I'm inclined to start a new page with windows 7 and start from scratch. If I do the easy upgrade and not a clean install, will all my troubles go away ? or will they stay in my computer and cont. to drive me crazy and therefore I would be better off with a clean install ?
Thanks for any advice.

Joe

Unless you want your problems that you are having now to be transferred to the upgrade install of windows 7 then you will need to do a fresh install. People often think that just because they are having problems in one operating system that they can just upgrade and all their problems will be gone. Well, thats not the case, you will transfer over any problems from the old OS to the new OS.

For a clean install, I would need to back up all my files which currently are only on the C hard drive. The D (data) drive is empty. Can I back up everything on to the D drive or does that get erased too in a clean install ?

No, you can backup your data to the D drive. Just make sure you don't delete that partition when you do your clean install. Only delete the C partition and then repartition.

Exactly.
