was wondering if i upgrade -install os windows vista will my old files be there or will it be a fresh install like turning on a new computer

Well the OS and other system files will be change\removed of course but the program files and files you added on to th computer after you first bought it\installed the OS, will stay on

If you just plain upgrade, then it will be fine (you hope). However, if you format your hard drive in the process (which it usually wants to do), then you will lose all your data that you didn't back up.

Always Back up your data before you do a major component change or do anything relating to reinstalling or upgrading windows

AFAIK, an upgrade is designed to keep your present files intact. That's the intent, anyway.
But, would you want to take that chance? Back 'em up just in case.

"Upgrades" are not the ideal way to go. Backup all your important files and wipe the drive out. It's always the best idea to start fresh.

I agree best to start fresh!:)

He can keep his previous files without upgrading

He can move all his important files from C: to D:, then he can format C: and make a new clean installation of windows Vista

I never said that he couldn't keep his files if he didn't upgrade I was just saying that, with upgrading it keeps them where they were.;)
