My specs: Dell dimension 4550
window xp home edition
Pentium 4 CPU 2.0GHz
512 MB of RAM
RAGE 128 PRO Ultra GL AGP

Was told by a techy that instead of upgrading RAM i can just upgrade video card and would get better performance. I tried to read up as much as I could however now i have a headache with the different options. Would like the best video card for my system if it will make a difference. Does anybody have any suggestions on which card to buy. Thanx in advance!

(ps i do alot of video converting which takes forever and ties up my system so that i can't do anything else but convert)

on a system like that, upgrading your video card to aid in video converting will do almost nothing, video editing and converting is solely dependent on your CPU and your RAM

Looking at your specs, well, neither one of them is worse, they are both fairly mediocre, if you're looking for better performacne, upgrade them both.

I would like to suggest a Core2Duo from intel, but in doing that you would have to get a new motherboard as well, which is a whole extra cost... I'm hoping that your Pentium is on socket LGA775, and not 478, that would at least give us something good to work with.

Here is another question. this link http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4550/specs.htm#1103227
is all about my dell dimension 4550. under memory it say minimum 128mb and maximum 1Gb. So since i already have 512 i quess i can only upgrade with another 512 stick of ram. Or can i get add another gig. This probably has to do with my processor and i guess i am just trying to find out how much more ram i can put in my system. again any help is appreciated.

Upgrading the video card would only improve gaming performance, but from the looks of it you cant play any decent games anyways. I would upgrade the RAM first, then the video card, then the processor.

Or you could always buy a new PC...

And could i upgrade to more than 1 gig or is this all the system can take. Because as is i have 512 and if i add another 1gig would i not be over or does it really matter?

ps your absolutely right about buy another pc. not there yet the kids are growing up and i guess they will get this one and i'll get the upgraded pc. probably just easier that way! thanx for all your help!
