Upgraded GPUs and not seeing performance increase

Hey all!

My build specs are in my sig. I upgraded my GPUs from 2x EVGA 9800GTX+'s in SLI to 2x Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Xtremes in CrossFire. I did a 3D Mark 11 benchmark and the score wasn't much different from the one I did with my 9800's in 3D Mark 06. I guess I'm not understanding the reason why my upgrade isn't really improving my performance. Is there a bottleneck that I'm not seeing? Thanks for any replies!

Well I decided to return the 5850's. They were not working for me, and I don't think I'll buy another ATI card again.

If there was problems other than your 3d mark score not going up then that's fine, but in general synthetic benchmarks are a pretty poor test of GPU power. 3D mark is especially notorious for this and seems to favour a good cpu over a gpu, resulting in skewed scores. I bet if you OC'd your i7 to ~3.5Ghz you'd see a massive increase in your score on the exact same graphics cards.

I wouldn't discard ATI/AMD either way, you'll get troubles with all kinds of hardware. Personally I've had a lot of headaches with nVidia products but it would be foolish of me to discard the brand due to a few lemons or a software glitch.

Regardless, I hope you find something that works well for you.

You're comparing an 06' score to 3dmark11 score? Talk about apples and oranges.

5850's are quite a bit stronger than 9800gtx+'s. But with that said, I would go with a single stronger GPU rather than SLI or Xfire. I recommend a gtx570.

^ +1 single card all the way, and yea you probably shouldnt decide on a synthetic benchmark to determine performance...use a game that you play often to determine with something like fraps... but thats me.
