Upgraded ram slower?

Hi guys, I have a bit of a problem here.

I have an ancient Acer Aspire desktop computer here and decided to try and make it run a bit better. I took home a computer that my college was throwing out and removed the ram from it to install into my Acer. After doing so, the performance of the computer severely declined, it was taking literally hours to do anything. I removed the newly installed ram and rebooted and still had the same problem.

What have I done? How do I solve this?
Any reply is greatly appreciated.
 
It'll be hard to give specs with such a slow process. How would I get these with out control panel? I can tell you that it's windows XP service pack 3 and I have 4 sticks of ram in total to try. I'm using the recovery discs that came with the computer now and hoping it will fix it. I'll let you know.
