UPGRADES: Many Options

I might be upgrading soon for BF2142 and some newer games coming out.

I have around $450-500, no more.

I have 1GB of RAM which I want to upgrade. A standard Dell case, and motherboard.

I was thinking maybe a 7900GT and 2GB, or maybe Core 2 Duo and a 7600GT. I am not really sure, but any options are welcome.

Thanks.

Well, you won't be wanting a 7600GT. It's nowhere near as good as a 7900GT.

Does the motherboard you have support C2D? If not, I wouldn't recommend getting a whole new motherboard. You won't have enough money to get a decent GPU.

In order of priority:

7900GT
CPU
RAM (could be above CPU, not sure lol)

:)

No, the motherboard I have does not support C2D. I would think 2GB would be first since in BF2142, the only recommended requirement I dont meet is the RAM.

You didn't say the rest of the specs on your computer.

It's a Dell 4700

P4 3.0
1GB (4x256MB)
X800XL

Definetly get the ram as #1, the 4x256 is in need of upgrading.
#2 would probably be the graphics card, but you would have to check what your power supply is like.

This is what I think: Upgrade the ram to 2x512, upgrade the cpu, then upgrade the gpu (it's still decent)

Yea, I was thinking the same about the the GPU. But the only thing is that I want 2GB. The reccomended specs as I said before is 1.5GB, so I was going for 2GB.

Then If I upgrade my CPU, I also must upgrade my case, mobo and HSF. Which is a problem.

O, yea the power supply. I forgot about that. I had a nice power supply but it went bad so as of now I am using a stock Dell PSU. So I will need to upgrade that.

If you need to upgrade the PSU too... i dont know if you should get 2Gb of RAM emediately. I had 2Gb, and now im at 1.5Gb because my dad needed an upgrade badly (2x 512, 2x256) and i never had a short on memory so far.
so maybe go for 2x 512 first, and keep some money for if 1,5Gb isnt enough. but 1Gb of descent RAM is still slightly over $100 i think... so its good for the budget (if you have to upgrade PSU and grafics). to stick with the 1.5Gb and see it is enough instead of getting 2Gb right away

I've been sticking with these mofo's, I bought a core 2 duo from them and it rocks, I suggest a core 2 duo and kick ass video card. Hooray! for Friday!

I might, but for some reason I like having the 2x1GB. I just find it cleaner. It is kind of a peeve of mine. But I will consider it.

Quite overpriced, IMO. For that price you can get a 7900GTO (yes, it's better than a GT :)), or X1900XT

Good point, I think the nVidia is better for the BF series. So I will consider that 7900GTO.

I would love a Core 2 Duo and a kick ass GPU. But sadly I dont want to spend that much money on my computer.

Just one last question:

Is there that much of an improvement between an ATi X800XL and a 7600GT.

And if there isnt, what GPU can I get for around $200 that will be better than my current X800XL?

Not much improvement. Some will really debate my last statement..

It's not worth upgrading. Better than your X800XL? Hmm. The X1900GT comes to mind, in addition you can fold with the X1900GT. There would probably be a fairly significant difference between the X800XL and it.

I know what you mean... i like 2Gb also better than the 1,5 i have atm. but i didnt notice a difference :) and when playing BF2142, my mem usage went to 78%.. so not even all memory was used yet :o

Here is what I have and almost exclusively play BF2 and I have played the Demo 2142. I upgraded to my current system to get smoother play on BF2. After seeing first hand the improvements over my last system I was playing it on I highly recommend the BFG 7900 GT OC 256MB and 2Gig of DDR2 Paired RAM. I happen to have Corsair but I'm sure some of the other RAM out there will work just as well for the BF2142. I upgraded from a BFG 6800GT AGP 256MB and 1 Gig of Corsair DDR RAM. ASUS M.B. with an AMD Athlon XP 3200 CPU run at 2.1 Ghz.
As far as finding the cheapest stuff, I like to compare prices bewtween whats on www.pricewatch.com and what deals I can find on Ebay. Currently I am shopping for a second BFG 7900 GT OC 256MB on ebay just for kicks. Most are going for close to $300. Like $279.00 but you can get them for as little as $200.00 if you are patient and play your cards right on Ebay.

Sadly, I have decided not to go with any upgrades besides the GPU.

That is why I asked this:

I downloaded the BF2142 Demo, and my load times were not bad at all. So I will stick with 1GB for now and stricly update the GPU, if it's worth it.
