Upgrading a Song laptop's memory

recently I purchased a new sony VAIO laptop with 1gb of memory. Preformance with vista is not what I wish it were and I am now thinking of adding a second 1gb memory card.

My question is this-

Song advertises memory upgrades at insane prices ($600) for their VGP-MM1GA 1 gb memory card. On newegg laptop memory appear to average around $90 for a 1 gb stick.

Is there any reason why i can't or should not just buy it off of new egg?

dude!!! you can get 1gb for less than $50!! on newegg no less! just make sure you get the right type. im guessing its gunna be DDR2-5300. also, you should open uo your computer and make sure it has a 1gb stick instead of 2x 512mb. thats what mine has, and it sucks. what that means is youll need to get 2x 1gb...which is a waste of money, but necessary. i would recommend you go with a brand such as corsair or kingston. they are respectable brands, and have lifetime warranties. newegg is great, i would buy anything from newegg! post if you have any more questions!

You will void your warranty if you open your case, Not something you want to do. If you don't care or don't have a warranty then go ahead, but if you void yours and something terrible happens to your computer, sony is going to tell you your screwed.

NO HE WONT!!! on my laptop, they have covers that easily unscrew to show the ram, wireless card and hard drives! you dont have to open the whole case. it will not void your warranty!

Ok, first off it's Sony not song...anywhoo my recommendation would be buy a single 2GB stick of ram...I say this for 2 reasons:
1) one of your memory slots is probably under the keyboard needing professional installation.
2) i can pretty much guarantee that your computer has 2x 512MB sticks currently meaning 1 stick of ram will be unaccessible by yourself knowing my previous statement.
due to these reasons, nab a 2GB single stick, very few manufacturers list compatibility with them, but so far I've not had a single issue going this route...plus then you'd have 2.5GB :D (fyi: newegg sells 2GB single sticks of DDR2 for about $109)

P.S. replacing the easily accessible memory stick WILL keep your warranty intact, the one under your keyboard MAY NOT so keep this in mind...

You sure that they're inaccessible? On my HP I remove a couple of screws and prise the cover off. It's not hard to upgrade laptop memory but go for a decent brand and not the cheap junk. Crucial and Corsair memory is said to be good.

....thats what i said in an earlier post :D

you dont know what you are talking about. there are access panels on the bottom of all laptops that you can unscrew and access ram, mpci cards, hdd and sometimes even the cpu...just like with a car and aftermarket products, you cant void the warranty.
