upgrading and serial numbers

So Ubuntu was giving me problems on my laptop because I screwed something up, so I wiped my HD with gparted and went back to vista because the serial number on the bottom was still valid. I have a windows 7 upgrade disc that I used for my non activated vista on my desktop. The serial # on the win 7 upgrade disc was used on a non activated machine, so if I use the same disc on an already activated machine, would it stay active or would it need another serial number?

From how I am reading this, I believe that you would need a new serial code. However, for 100 bucks, you can get the OEM version, and that has an unlimited license.

Or I can spend $15 on a upgrade disc from my college. But thanks for the input. I guess i'll just buy one of those then.

I would hold on a minute and just let someone else confirm, as I am not sure. That is just what I think, but I might be wrong, let someone who has more knowledge with how that works help before you drop 15 bucks.

If the key that came with the windows 7 install disk has already been activated on a different machine, you won't be able to use it. You would need a new copy and key of the operating system.
