Upgrading AT&T Internet Plan (Slow Connection)

Howdy all, I am considering upgrading my DSL plan with AT&T. I have some questions on what I would have to do/upgrade to achieve a faster speed.

First of all my house is almost 180 years old and you can imagine how old the wires are. So, my question is will I have to replace the wiring? we had a AT&T guy out a few years back that put in a new phone jack, is that considered replacing the wires? I dont think he tied into any of the other phone jacks. I think he attached it to the ...box? outside.

Right now we are paying for the pro package that says "up to 3mbps" I'm thinking about the max package that says "up to 12mbps".

Here is my speed, which I guess is normal for this DSL plan.

Don't quote me on it as I am not an AT&T tech or phone engineer.

I don't think you will have to change your wires. The 3MB package you have runs about the same speed as the 3MB package we had from Century Link (worst service in the area.). To upgrade past 10MB you will need something a little better than phone line from what I know. Something like fiber optic or coaxial. but you might get near to 10 or at 10 on phone lines as long as you don't have any splits or breaks.

Regular ATT only has dsl up to 6MB, you would need to upgrade to Uverse to get 12MB. If your house is that old I don't think it would be able to handle Uverse.

That and you need to be close to the exchange

ISP's are the worst when it comes to artificial speed caps :( The big telco in AU mislead people for years, and when it comes out that they lied, all they get is a slap on the wrist... meanwhile my ISP offers you the speed of whatever your line gives, up and down. Too bad they have to rent lines off of the big telco, I don't want my money going to that monopoly.

Yeah these internet company's get pretty crazy, I don't fully understand it all so that's another reason i'm asking, I new there would be a catch.

So how can I atleast get the 6mbps?

Call them and see what they say. It all depends on how far away you are from the exchange.

Replacing the wires would be ideal, if its that old. I know I had to get my ports at my local exchange replaced because of how old they were. It might be expensive, but if you get the wires in your house replaced, that should make a significant difference to the quality of your connection. Of course, if you are experiencing drop outs as well.

Yes we get drop outs when its storming or very cloudy, I have no idea why.

I will have to research how much it will cost but if we can at least get the speed up 2 or 3mb's I would be happy, the drop outs do not bother me to much (yet) Im sure the wires will need upgrading soon but probably not now.
