Upgrading computer, what to upgrade first?

(TL;DR if you don't care about why I want to upgrade my comp, scroll down to the specs, read them, then tell me which of them I should upgrade, in what order, and hopefully provide a link/price/suggestion. Thanks. Oh and I got the comp for free, so don't expect it to be amazing.)

Edit: my monitor is a 22" Samsung, and I usually run games at max resolution because I hate having big HUD's. So if this will effect the price of stuff, lemme know pl0x.

A friend of my grandparents upgraded to the new iMac (she's an older lady, doctor) and gave me her old custom PC that her nephew built for her a few years ago.

My old PC, probably a 6-7 year old Dell, was absolute trash, so this computer is pretty much a godsend for me (I can run Rift at about 60fps, when I used to get 3-5fps).

However, I've noticed that I'm being forced to use lower render settings on different games (Rift, for ex) and generally get 40-60 fps. I also have to have the environent/object distance on low, so I can't see very far ahead of me.

I would eventually like this computer to be able to run Rift at about medium settings and never drop below 60 fps (prefferably 70, that way I don't feel any hiccups).

Since I already have an entire computer, I don't need to buy another computer all together. I would just like to upgrade each piece of hardware seperately, and over time.

My budget would be around $1000 for everything, but I'm hoping it won't get close to that.

Current specs:
Motherboard: unknown... fishy motherboard, couldn't install Windows 7 via disk, had to put on a USB, and my computer won't tell me which one it is).

RAM: 4GB DD2 (computer only recognizes 3.2GB, is that because 800mb is going to my GPU?) I'd eventually like to get this up to 6-8, if that would make a difference.

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT

HDD: a 60GB HDD from 2003... I'll be getting a 1TB this Saturday. What kind though? I'm not familiar with the "SATA" and all the other words beside the size.

Processor CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @2.40GHz (I'm assuming dual core. I'd like to go with a quad core though for around $200.)

Well I think that's about it. If there's anything else I need that I should upgrade (that I didn't list, but obvious pieces of hardware that I seem to have forgotten).

So basically, given those specs, which should I upgrade first? In what order? Could you link me to a product?

I know it's a lot to ask, but I'm curious, I'd really like to get a computer that could run Rift at 70fps, with at least medium graphic settings.

Thanks :)

We need to know what motherboard you have so download speccy from here and post the results of the log.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy/

Download and install the program and then run it. After it has produced the results click on the file menu, click on save as text file and copy and paste the results back here.

At this point you will have to get new motherboard, memory, cpu, psu, gpu. It's an older motherboard that is limited to E6700 for dual core and q6700 for quad core cpu's. You may want to change to amd has its cheaper and the new bulldozer cpu's/motherboards will be coming out shortly. I'll let someone else pick out parts for you. But it will best to get all parts at the same time as better parts come out every so often

Makes sense, maybe I will just upgrade it all at once.

Could anybody suggest what specific parts to upgrade to?

Personally I would just upgrade the GPU. The rest of the computer is still quite capable. You can also slap on an aftermarket heatsink and OC your CPU.

If it is an original equipment manufacturer motherboard I doubt he could overclock. I think you should upgrade your power supply and video card. The processor is not bad and 4 gigabytes is plenty of RAM.

Edit: If you decide to sell I think you could get $20 for the memory and around $30 for the processor.

This hard drive has fast read speeds:

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320 gigabyte 7200 RPM Serial ATA Hard Drive - $50.50

What video games are you planning on playing?

Yeah I can run Rift perfectly fine on it, I just have to dumb down the graphic settings, which I don't like doing.

If I upgraded the graphics card, would it increase my FPS/allow me to raise the graphics? Or would I have to get a new CPU as well?

yes, a upgraded GPU will increase your FPS and allow you to step up the graphical settings.

As the specs above say, you need a GTS250 or higher to play it well. based off this, I would suggest a GTS450, to be able to give you a slightly better gaming experience.
