Hi I have a HP Pavilion 7955
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph06973&lc=en#N254
That is the spec of the machine and the only upgrade i have is a radeon 9800graphics card. I want to upgrade my
CPU to about 3.2 (maybe a litle higher). Would I be able to use a faster processor or would i have to upgrade other parts of my pc first? If so what?
Thanks in advance Chris

This is the Procesor im looking at getting
Intel Pentium 4 640 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.2GHz (800FSB) with HT Technology - Retail (CP-093-IN)
The new Intel® Pentium® 4 processor at 3.2GHz with an advanced 800 MHz system bus offers higher levels of performance, creativity and productivity. Based on Intel® NetBurst™ microarchitecture and built with Intel's 0.09-micron technology, the Pentium 4 processor delivers significant performance gains for use in home computing, business solutions and all your processing needs. The Pentium 4 processor at 3.2GHz with an advanced 800 MHz system bus also supports Hyper-Threading Technology, enabling you to multitask more efficiently when you run demanding applications at the same time. The Prescott edition features a huge 2MB L2 cache for improved performance whilst SSE3 extensions have been added and further improvements made to HT and Netburst technologies make this a far more efficient and awsomely fast processor. Supporting Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T)f as an enhancement to Intel's IA-32 architecture on server and workstation platforms. This enhancement enables the processor to execute operating systems and applications written to take advantage of Intel® EM64T. The Intel® Pentium® 4 processor supporting Intel® EM64T enables entry-level single processor workstation and server users 64-bit memory addressability for great application flexibility.

- 2MB L2 Cache
- EIST Technology
- Intel NetBurst microarchitecture
- Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology
- Hyper-Threading Technology

Also would a Amd Rum on my system or should i stick with the pentium? Let me know what you think of the procesor
Many thanks chris

Well since thats a P4 1.8Ghz, its not a LGA775 socket, it would most likely be 478. And i dont think your motherboard can support 3.2Ghz, seeing that theres only a 1.8 in there now. What i would do is get a new motherboard, cpu, and case.

And you can only use an AMD on an AMD motherboard, and same with Intel's.

Right i am going to get a new case processor and mother board Please could you recommenda mother board that would suit me. Imainly use the computer for gaming and web surfing im wiling to pay around 200 pound english money for the procesor and the mother board although a little less would be prefered im going to be runing xp pro. Please could you recomend a good mother board and processor to use. prosecor about a 3.2 any sugetion welcome many thanks chris

well remember, amd uses lower frequencies at higher speeds... so an athlon 64 3200+ (3200 representing mhz as a p4 performance wise) performs about as good as a pentium 4 3.2ghz, but runs at 2ghz!
i prefer AMD myself, its said to be better for gaming and personally i think its better for everything (i own dual core ;) )
a good amd mobo would be this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135162
and a good amd proc would be this one

or this one for a cheaper buy

first one performs as good as a p4 3.5ghz... and the second performs as good as a pentium 4 3.2ghz...
if youre doing multiple processor intensive applications at once id go intel though... for the hyperthreading... but if youre just gaming then get amd

fade2green...do you relize that 3500 does not mean equal to 3.5 annd 322doest not mean equal to 3.2? It is true that AMD with lower frecentces can beat intel's with high ones, but the numbers dont directly relate.

Numbers are purely coincidental

I dont think so :S
