Upgrading Current Build

Well as I am currently tired of my old system as it needs a dire upgrade. I need to upgrade my motherboard and processor. I currently am looking to spend around 200 dollars give or take on both.

Current Build:
Mobo: Intel D915PBL 800mhz fsb
Processor: Pentium P4 3.40ghz
Graphics Card: BFG 8600gt
Power Supply: 600watt
Hard Drive: 250gb western digital

I would like to get a dual core and a motherboard with 2x pci-e 2.0 slots so I can set up sli later on. Currently going to keep the graphics card the same untill I have more cash. If you have any other suggestions I am completely open to them. Also Intel or amd is fine, I have not yet decided what is best myself.

well if you want SLI and under $200 for both that will be tough. A nice AMD dual core is about $80, and Intel is $120. Now a nice SLI board is at least $150 and that isn't having both pci ports running at full speed. I would suggest getting the new AMD athlon, and saving up for the foxconn destroyer, because that mobo normally has decent rebates on it. Ill try to grab some links in a little bit.

The motherboard Fly picked is very good, but expensive.

The Athlon 7750 Dual-Core processor can't be beat for $80, but the only problem is you may have to flash a motherboard BIOS to get it up and running since it just hit the market.

I would either wait about a month for a good motherboard with a BIOS that supports the Athlon 7750 processor or take a look at the Phenom 8650 Toliman Tri-Core processor priced at $102:

Alright well thank you for the quick replies, I think I may go with fly's two picks, but unsure at the moment. Would possibly like to see some cheaper alternatives. However the processor I will stick with, understandably that the two pcie ports wont be up to full speed. Also any suggestions on a single graphics card at the moment would be great as well. Around 100-150 dollars is what I am willing to spend however the motherboard I am going to be more flexible on now.

well you could do a non SLI mobo, and just run a single geforce 9800 gtx+ or something along those lines, it all depends on the performance you are looking for, but a card like that will be around $150 alone, i think you should first wait a bit and expand your budget.

Alright well thank you very much for the advice. I am just going to go a couple parts at a time and hope prices go down soon. Not looking to hardcore game too much just taking it as a building experience to learn more.

I would not buy a few components at a time unless you can assemble them with whatever hardware you currently have. You want to be able to test components when you get them to see if they are in working condition or defective.

Prices always come down in the future with computer components so time is on your side if you have patience.
