Upgrading Dell 2400 PSU and GPU

I am trying to help a family member upgrade her GPU on a Dell 2400. But in order to upgrade the GPU, I need to upgrade the PSU. I just don't know what kind I can use. Does Dell use a special kind of PSU?

I have a OCZ GameXStream 700 watt PSU that I am not using. Would that work? For the GPU, I am looking at a 8400GS

The dimension 2400 should use a standard ATX power supply. Quite honestly though, those are only PCI im pretty sure, and pci cards arent very good and relatively expensive. May be time for a bit more of an upgrade than just gpu....

Would the OCZ PSU fit or would it be to big in size? Yes they use PCI cards and I can get one for around $50. Honestly, I don't think she wants to upgrade to a whole new computer just yet. The only thing she does with it is play card games and create a few word files. She is not a computer person. She does not even have internet and does not use it every day.

I will say something to her but I don't think she will go for it. If she did want a whole new computer, what do you think I could build one for and what specs?

Basic use? If you use that power supply you have there you could be talking $300 or so before the OS. A dedicated gfx card wouldnt really be a great upgrade anyhow, if its just for that sort of use.

As far as PSU, take it and check the size. I think the 2400's used ATX sized power supplies, i think only the slim dimensions back then used microatx power supplies.

Okay thanks, Bomber. That is a nice little build. She only uses it for card playing and word documents. She does not even have internet. 2gb's would be plenty of ram and 250gb would be way more than enough space for her.

The only reason I was looking at getting a video card is because she has a dvd card game that will not work. She is using onboard video right now so I thought that could not handle the game. It gives me a directx error so I tried updating the drivers and did not help.

I will take some measurements and see what fill fit. If I do buy a standard ATX PSU, would I need any kind of an adapter? I read on another forum that I would need an adapter. This is the adapter: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=dellconverter

My dad has a Dell 2400 and he is using a ATI Radeon 9250 card. Is that too much for the PSU?

Dimension 2400's should use a standard atx power supply 20 or 24pin connector.

I will go take some measurements. So I don't need any kind of an adapter? This is the one: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=dellconverter I may talk to a local repair shop and see what they say just to be safe.
What about the 9250, is that too much for the PSU?

Thanks for you help, bomberboysk.

Off topic, is it just me or is this forum becoming dead? It seems that not too many people are helping out anymore.

You won't need any adapters. the Radeon 9250 is quite an old card, it wont take much out of a modern PSU.

I took some measurements and they are 5 1/2 x 6 x 3 1/2. How do I know what the dimensions of new PSU's are? Most of them do not list the dimensions on newegg.
