Upgrading from 2000 to XP - problem...

As soon as I tried to load the XP disc I was faced with a dialogue box. It told me that Windows 2000 Pro did not support an upgrade to XP Pro - I know for a fact that these two operating systems can be upgraded.

The second thing is when I said ok - it let me go to the next stage of the installation procedure. My question is, bearing in mine it keeps coming up with this issue should I just install XP?

Thanks

What service pack are you running on your 2000 machine. I found this online but dont know how old it is.

"Windows 2000 Professional, SP1, SP2 and SP3 can be upgraded to Windows XP Professional only. The windows 2000 professional cd-rom is taken as valid install media to do a 'clean' install using an upgrade version of XP Home."

Im not a fan of upgrades myself and would rather format and do a fresh install to avoid glitches.

Well

It seems to me that it should work. However, I would still prefer to do a clean install nevertheless. Backup everything and go for it ;)

ive had this before, it says you cant do an upgrade, but you can still do a clean install... bes idea is to backup all important data and start fresh, its usually a good thing anyway, dust out those hidden corners of the HDD thats slowing the system down...
