Upgrading from XP to 7

Later this month I plan to upgrade my OS from XP to 7 but I don't know how to do it myself.

So, what I need to know is:

1- Should I clean the HDD with kill disk before installing 7?
2- Are there any good tutorials that show how to format and install 7?

Just backup pictures or anything else ya want. Install the 7 cd and boot. it will wipe and clean install. just make sure the cd or dvd player is set as 1st boot device. should be. I installed Windows 7 pro over xp pro. went fine.

But you can't upgrade XP to 7. There is only one benefit of having Vista, in my opinion, and that's because it's easy to upgrade to 7.

wrong. you can wipe with nothing and get it going with the procedure. Question is do you want to go from 32bit to 64bit.
Does the hardware support it. both are on there. Its also been talked about many time here with say a new hd and no operating system. it can be done.

heres a link at microsoft never the less. xp to 7. i did and worked just fine.

at least the upgrade was available with 32 or 64 with the pro retail ver.

its choice for me. pick and choose. the oem might not have a 64 installation. i had 32 bit xp. my intel was also ready for 64. i chose to install the 64 bit and get er done. getting the software working (all) is just another adventure. you have options.

lots of nice feature though. Yes its another adventure. Ya got to figure it out. lots of help here though getting over the hump.

cheers......tremmor

That's a complex clean installation. It's what you would have to do anyway. It's NOT an upgrade, an upgrade takes your old OS and upgrades the core with the new, without any Easy Transfer getting involved and no program reinstallation. Just insert your installation media and go through the steps to upgrade. No file transfer. That's an upgrade, and it only works with Vista. Trust me, I had XP until I read 20 something reviews on 7. I've gone through it.

why do you want to keep 32bit? 64 has so much more to offer!!!

in what sense does it offer much more?
I'm afraid not all programs I have will work in 64 bit.

so what does this mean? does it mean I can't upgrade it given that I'm working with XP?

You can't upgrade, but you can transfer files and settings. Just be sure your programs work with 7. I wouldn't install to your current drive, I would install on another drive and dual boot between the two until you know that you're comfortable with 7 and that your programs work. Then install on your XP HD.

There are workarounds for XP, but officially:
If you have Vista as your existing OS then the option is there to keep all your own data and upgrade to Windows 7 without losing anything.

If you have XP as your existing OS then a clean install is your option. This means all your personal data will be lost unless you use the "File transfer wizard" or some other method of your choosing, or if you are'nt fussy about wiping your drive, just follow the prompts when you insert the W7 disc.

Guys, I have saved all my data in an external HDD so that's not a problem.
All I want to do now is how to upgrade from XP to 7 and if that's possible. period.

I said before and will say again. I upgraded recently from XP pro 32 bit to a retail ver upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
thats it. it happened. Stuck the cd in and BAM! ........done.

Seriously? It's easy.

I moved to W7 64 bit a last week and love it. It was easy to install and I didn't have to install my motherboard chipset drivers either! The best install I have ever done.

Pop the CD in and boot from it. The OS files will load then the OS will load. At this point I thought it froze but leave it for 5-10 minutes and you get the install options. Choose the drive/partition you want to install to and ENTER. Thats it.

:)

I would not do any other way. i will not do a quick format.
its a hard or low level. i want a wipe and reinstall. He already mentioned he backed up what he wanted. install the program and go. ya don't want a previous installation to pickup on any issues. start over. brand new and go.

If you have the W7 CD pop it in and go for it.

Since windows 7 came out,I have not had one application/game that would not run under 7 x64 bit.

Trust me on this one ;)

+1

I'm testing it on my Internet install and seriously thinking about running my audio software under W7 64.

It's brilliant.
