i have this ibm x40 that was given to me for free and i was thinking about upgrading the memory and hdd to a ssd.

the only ssd that i have come across so far is this chinese one

http://cgi.ebay.com/KINGSPEC-1-8-5m...034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b5266992

for what ive read so far it works just fine but i rather buy something in the U.S. so i can return it or exchange it if any problems arise.

does anyone know of any other sdd that would work for this and what is a good brand of ram do use on it?

I have to advise against ordering any sort of flash memory directly from China. eBay is full of shoddy flash memory. Also, the drive you've selected uses a 40 pin ZIF connector rather than the 44 pin IDE connector you need.

i just clicked the clicked the 1st one i saw. but like i said i rather buy it in the U.S. thats why i was asking if theres any brands that i can find on newegg, tigerdirect, etc.

Well, the particular hard drive that you need, 1.8" IDE, is something of a rarity. This would work, however it's hard to vouch for the quality, although the seller does have 100% feedback. It does come from a USA seller, and reportedly has a 2 year manufacturer warranty. Also, I was able to find a review that indicates that these drives may not be too bad despite the no-name manufacturer.

ive read a few things saying it works fine and that it makes a pretty good difference in load speed. thanks for finding the USA ad for this. i guess i should have looked harder lol.

do you guys think that this would be a good investment? or should i just save my money for a new laptop. bc thats basically 200 and i know the dual cores laptops arent that much anymore

I don't think it is worth spending too much money to upgrade the X40. however you upgrade, the CPU speed is still a bottleneck. if you really need good performance, buying new one is a better choice.
