Upgrading LAN/Gaming Server

I want to know the best hardware for my LAN parties and gaming server. I'll use the same computer/setup for both, just not at the same time.

I am looking for everything pretty much, since my current server will be turned into a backup PC.

I want to be able to host other computer connections, manage a few internet connections, and be able to troubleshoot any problems that may occur.

Thanks.

But yeah, I just want to have a nice server, and host LAN's without problems, and have a server that can host a gaming server.

Should I look into building a new server, or just keeping the one I currently have?

What games are you hosting?

Hopefully to host games you aren't using the graphical versions of the dedicated server software. With the command interface, you can optimize everything...

I would try to make a setup where there is little transition time from hosting game x to hosting game y at a LAN.

CSS, TF2, BF2/2142, COD4 stuff like that.

How are the specs on that computer I posted?

Thanks.

My Pentium 4 541 3.2Ghz w/ HT + 1Gb RAM hosts a 24 person TF2 server with no problem... Now seeing that a CS:S server should be easier on the computer than TF2, it should have no problem with that game. COD4 might be a small bit more hungry, but you should be fine.

Now BF2/BF2142 has got me thinking. I would think it would require more RAM, so upgrade to a minimum of 2Gb and go from there. As you know, in BF2 and BF2142 there are vehicles and larger maps.. Personally for those games I would go to 4Gb.

I am software enthusiast as you might know... I would create an app that toggles my server's different game hosting on/off...

What are the files you have to execute to get each game running?

Like for COD4, BF2, BF2142... And just out of curiosity, did you set your TF2 and CSS server up with HLDS?

Yeah, I used HLDS, that'd be great if you could make a program.

I have to resolve the COD4 launching issue, it says something about latest drivers on my sound card, which is on board, and DirectX, both of which I updated. Appears in the COD4 Console, when I go to launch COD4 Multiplayer.

Thanks.
