upgrading laptop optical drive-compatibility?

I have a dell computer. and i want to upgrade my drive to a blue ray player. How bad is the compatibility issues?

IDE/SATA is one thing right? And the form factor of the drive itself, i'm wondering are they all the same, or how how different they are in different model of the same company, or how about across different companies?
 
As long as you buy one that the has the right connection type(sata or IDE), you are good to go.
 
as he said the proper connection is required.

if you're talking about the faceplate that can be unscrewed/screwed on to match the chassis
