Upgrading memory static?

I just received my memory and I was about to change it watching a video and apparently I need anti-static wrist band and mat? I also read we can discharge the static by touching grounded metal? What would that be exactly? Do I need the mat and band, if not how would I discharge the static? It's a laptop just in case that matters.
 
No wrist band needed, just touch any nonpainted metal part of the case before handling parts.
 
grounded metal. touch the screw on the receptacle cover. One thing though. If ya live in a cold high static area like myself then scraping your feet with your shoes or socks creates static like across the carpet. Ya could get in bare feet and just ground your self as mentioned. Ya shouldn't have a problem installing memory.
 
I won't be wearing shoes is that good? Also I think the whole computer is made of metal parts(or steel) which part would that be in that case? Also what is the receptacle cover? How would I tell what is grounded metal?
 
bare metal on the tower. (bare). The screw on the receptacle cover is grounded to the receptacle. Its a direct ground.
 
No, he's talking about the outlet cover on the wall outlet. Just touch nonpainted metal on the case and insert your memory.
 
What is the receptacle? The outlet? But that isn't metal no?(at least mine isn't) but where would I touch? Also on my laptop it's all made of steel I believe so which part of it should I touch?
 
Like said just touch anything metal on the laptop before grapping the memory and installing. Even with a wrist band you still have to conect it to something metal. A cheap way to make a wrist band. Take some speaker wire, strip off enough plastic on one end to wrap the wire around your wrist and enough on the other end to attach to something metal on the laptop. either way will work just fine.
