Upgrading my computer

overdoze

Hi, I am new to this forum and the whole DIY thing. So, I would be very grateful if anyone had advice or tips regarding to a few upgrades I have planned to make for a while now.

My current setup is the following (Information collected with PC Wizard 2008):

Motherboard : Asus M2N-E
Chipset : nVidia nForce 570 SLI
Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3500+ @ 2200 MHz
Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : Nvidia Corp GeForce 7600 GT
Hard Disk : ST3250620AS (250 GB)

On the power supply it says 3.3V - 28A; 5V - 35A; 12V - 25A, altogether 400W

I was hoping to keep the motherboard and replace the processor with AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4800+ and the video card with VGA 512MB Club3D GeForce 8800GT and lastly add 2 GB of RAM. This would cost about $400.

The computer would be used for gaming (not much, I just want to be able to run Assassins' Creed on medium-high settings), but mostly for video editing and post-production effects.

One of my main concerns is if I have to get a new power supply too?

Any advice on the setup is highly appreciated :)

If you haven't got the CPU, I suggest you get the AMD ATHLON 64 X2 5000+ Black edition. It is a better overclocker in case you want to overclock your machine later.

What brand is your PSU? Looking at the spec, it seems to meet the requirement of 8800GT. I do recommend to spend another $60 for a 500W PSU.

The PSU is by COLORSit and was a part of the pre-buit system I am now trying to improve. I really doubt I am going to overclock the processor, though.
I was looking at this PSU before, would it be enough to support the system under heavy stress (though it's not 500W)?
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W
If not, then do you have any recommendations?

Lastly, are there any bottlenecks in the hypothetical new setup? I'd love to get the max out of every component.

Coloursit is a poor brand! One of my PC gone due to it. (I don't know much about the PC hardware brand when I build it)

Corsair 450W is enough to run your system.

I wouldn't get the 8800GS, I'd get the 8800GT like you mention, that or an 8800GTS 512MB < Make sure it's the 512MB version, NOT the 320 or 640.

Something like an AMD X2 4800+, 2GB of RAM and an 8800GT would be perfectly fine for gaming!

Newegg doesn't ship to Europe, sadly.
Also, I have noticed a lot of negative comments concerning the asus m2n-e, something about it being caompatible with only certain types of RAM? Do I need a new motherboard too?
