Upgrading my computer

A while ago I wanted to upgrade my computer to a core 2 quad Q9500, but never had the $ to do it so now im faced with the problem that my computer keeps shuting down due to a "thermal event" my dad thought it was the graphics card so we sent it in to xfx and they said it was bad so problem solved. Until today we figured out that it wasnt the gcard due to another "thermal event" so i have came to the conclution that it is either my mobo or CPU either way im going to need an upgrade

I need to find a mobo: supports at least DDR2 mem(if DDR3 slots are backwards compatible they are prefered), PCI-e and SLI, core 2 quad, 8GB of RAM, micro-ATX
I have a CPU: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3952342&CatId=2758

I have been hearing that socket 775 is dying but my father wont let me get AMD and im not going to get an i7 or i5

Thermal issue?

Have you knocked your PC over by any chance. I knocked mine over a while back - and popped one of the fasteners off my heatsink. When I reseated the Heatsink / CPUFAN - my temps were high and I had to work on fixing the connectors and reseat the cooler to my MOBO. It might be something as simple as that. If your CPU doesn't have a secure seating to the CPU heatsink / fan - the temp gets very hot rapidly.

CORETEMP will give you the temp of your CPU - if that's what's getting hot - it should be an easy fix. If it's something else - others will have to help.

Speedfan also does a similar function

Make sure your fans all work too - maybe get a can of compressed air and blow out any dust that's impeding air flow too.

no i havent knocked it over and my computer is at the point that it powers up and immediately turns off just looking arround i may just go with the i7 with intels new mobo

Have you tested your RAM. If a stick goes bad on ya - can cause all kinds of computer mishaps. If you are using multiple sticks of RAM - you can test each one individually on a single channel of your MOBO to see if you can identify that one of em is bad.

well i checked my RAM and nothing is wrong with it i replaced my processor with a pentium d figureing out that my mobo supported socket LGA 755 now i have the problem of my computer will not show me anything but it will turn on and it shows a constant orange dot on the front next to the power symbol.

i just got my new graphics card geforce 9500 gt from xfx today but i dont have a computer i can install it into to use it...
