Upgrading my CPU at a reasonable price?

Hi Everyone,

I have an old lynnfield i5-750 @ 2.67 ghz. I checked the benchmarks for this CPU and I was astonished how poor it does against other CPUS.

Here was the benchmark I looked at below

https://cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5+750+@+2.67GHz&id=772

I am looking for a Mobo+CPU+RAM upgrade (AMD or intel is fine) for under 400 dollars (preferably less :D )

Could anyone maybe point me in the right direction.

The only reason I want this is for the new tomb raider game that comes out in January on the PC. I was going to get an xbox one but I think its a waste of money for myself .

Merry Christmas,

Matt

If you live near a Microcenter there are a few 6600K+Motherboard bundles for around $350 (you'd also have to budget in DDR4 RAM).

Personally your GPU is going to hold you back more than the CPU. Any chance of overclocking your current setup?

Passmark is outdated (and mostly useless) benchmark.

Rise of Tomb Raider's system requirements are currently unknown. I predict that your CPU will barely meet "recommended" specs but GPU will fall to "minimum" category. And because system requirements are not known yet, wait until they are revealed.

Hi Guys,

Yeah there is a Microcenter at Villanova Pennslyvania, about twenty minutes away. 6600K are the new skylake Mobos right?

Beers I meant to write I kind of want to upgrade my Mobo too. So everyone thinks for about 450 I can get the CPU + Mobo and Ram?

I am glad I read this before I bought the combo. I am going to start with my GPU. I am trying to spend less than 250 for my GPU. Any recommendations?

Really? So I can dedicate my older card just for the physics? That sounds great but I worry about my PSU supply now

If you need to upgrade one thing and want better gaming performance then I would definitely get a new GPU. You could get something like a GTX 960 4GB which would be a huge upgrade and would probably get close to running the latest titles at max settings at 1080p. Maybe even look at a 970 or 980 if you want to be future-proof. I don't think an i5 750 will hold you back too much with a 960 or a 970, it's actually still a pretty strong CPU especially if you overclock it.
