Upgrading my old build!

Hey,
After almost 3 years with my current build I believe it is time for a much needed upgrade!
I will be using some components that I already have such as

os
CD/DVD drive
1 tb WD harddrive
CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...005&cm_re=corsair_650w-_-17-139-005-_-Product
and my computer case

------------------

Here are the parts I am upgrading to:

G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (from 4gb g.skill)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416

Gigabyte windforce gtx 770 4gb (from ati 5770)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125462

i7 4770k (from amd 965 3.4ghz deneb black)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116901

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130693

Samsung 840 pro 256gb

What do you guys think? The cpu choice has been by far the hardest as I want a good match between the gpu and cpu in terms of equal life and matching performance for both until my next upgrade. The breaking factor for the 4770k over the 3570k for me was the fact that I am coming from such a old cpu in the first place I may as well just get the best I can afford right now :) (am I looking at this the wrong way?)

Oh, as far as use for this computer it is mainly for gaming and video and photo editing as well.
Also MMORPGs like wow and Final Fantasy XIV ARR, probably Wildstar too

So any comments or advice you may think of is greatly appreciated!

Alright Ill look into the 4670k some more, honestly have just skimmed over it here and there.

Another thing I forgot to put in is when I am gaming I normally have skype and chrome, music, documents, and a bunch of stuff open in the background. Will 8gb of RAM be ok for this or should I look into 16gb?

8GB is enough. If your old stick(s) are DDR3 1600 just toss them in with the 8GB you're going to upgrade to.

I have 12GB and when I'm gaming I normally have Steam open, at least one tab of Chrome open, iTunes, Skype, Fraps, and sometimes various other programs and I rarely see my usage peak over 6GB. I have 12GB simply because it didn't make sense to get rid of the 4GB I already had when I added an 8GB kit.

Also I think if you've got the cash and you're wanting it to last a while (and you said you do video and picture editing) keep the 4770K. It will last longer in terms of staying competitive in performance.

Out of curiosity, what's your case?

I have two different cases available for this.
First, is what I am currently using
Antec Nine Hundred Two Black Steel ATX Mid Tower
and the second is a full size monster of a tower lol, so if the gpu is a tight fit in the mid tower I can just use the beast closet size case =P

A i7 will show nearly NO difference in games over a 4670K. Get the i5. Other then that, it's all nice.

no difference in gaming, but he also mentioned video/photo editing.

@tactic What software are you using for editing and is it just for fun or is your photo/video stuff more professional?

I can see the upgrade to an i7 if you need the extra cores for editing, but if gaming is the main focus then yes go with the 4670k. Still plenty of power there.

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS3, and yes they are semi professional. Video editing I am not doing right now however in the future I may be getting into that, not professionally though.

Since PCunicorn had directed me towards the i5 4670k I have been looking to comparisons between both in gaming. Right now they are give or take 1-3% identical in current games. Video encoding is where the 4770 really seems to take the lead but that doesn't really apply to me currently.

I'm buying the K version obviously to Overclock, however this also seems to be a bit of an issue with the Haswells in general as they run hot so that is hit or miss with what I can do.

At the same time they should preform better at a lower clock speed in comparison to cpus like 3570k or 3770k at higher clock speeds, correct?

Yes, they will preform better at a locker clock speed, and no that isnt crazy high for Haswell. Sure, they run hot but not THAT hot.

IMO heat really isn't much of a issue. From what I have seen Haswell and Ivy are good overclockers and while they are hotter, it is not nearly out of control. I would not be surprised to see 4.2GHz without investing huge amounts into cooling.

If video editing is not really your thing then I doubt that the extra threads would make that big of a difference. The 770 that you want to get will be enough of a boost with the Cuda cores to make up for not having Hyper-Threading (and then some). I'll second PCunicorn on the 4670k. Use the money saved on the i5 elsewhere in the build or pocket it.

To answer your last question, yes Haswell is another revision of the Intel's architecture So it is faster than Ivy Bridge. However, I highly doubt you can see the difference unless you were benchmarking. I would buy into the newer generation because I am pretty sure that the Z87 motherboards have some new features that the Z77 did not. I am not sure on exactly what because work has kept me pretty busy... :(

Alright I am highly considering the 4670k now, thank you guys so much for the input it is greatly helping me!

I am going to be making my purchase today at some point and I have one more question that I'd like to hear what you think about.

gigabyte
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125462

or

EVGA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130945

Is this just preference? I've heard nothing bad about either, it looks like the gigabyte maybe having a driver issue right now but nothing serious.
Does anyone have experience with one over the other?

The EVGA card comes with a back plate and 3dmark for free upon registration, I do not believe the Gigabyte comes with a back plate or 3dmark.

I'd go with the Gigabyte since it has slightly higher stock clocks and what appears to be better cooling. Both are good companies. Also both use the same drivers so you're going to have driver success/failure regardless of which you get.

If you feel the need for the backplate or 3Dmark, then the EVGA is still a fine choice.

Honestly either would work fine but Gigabyte is slightly faster out of the box.

Hey I'm back,
so just to follow up here are the parts I went with,

gtx 780 evga
i7 4770k
ASRocks Z87 Extreme6 mobo
8 gb G.Skill Sniper
Samsung 840 EVO 250gb SSD

Now, I have a question that maybe I just need some clarifying as I have been looking at other threads with addressing the issue and I just want to make sure I am going in the right direction.

Now, this build was an upgrade build so I am using my old PSU (Corsair 650w), HDD, and my Windows 7 (not oem, I am so glad I wasn't stupid when I first built this comp lol)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116716

What I am trying to accomplish is a fresh install of Windows on my ssd and wiping my hdd clean? I will put my docs and such on my eternal drive so I won't lose them but I want a fresh install for all these parts, it just feels like the right thing to do.

So has anyone done this? Is this the right way to do this? I have never wiped a hard drive clean before or used a ssd for that matter.

Thank you in advance and sorry for my noobish questions:P
