i can buy Windows 7 Professional for $34, but if i upgrade from window vista to Windows 7, do i lose stuff on my harddrive. if i dont, is there something i have to do to do this?

Always, always, always back up your data. Technically an upgrade does not erase anything and it moves all your old windows file to an older folder, however you run the risk of losing it all if something goes wrong during that process.

so always back up your data.

An Upgrade is meant to leave all your programs and data intact.

A "Custom Install", as Microsoft puts it, will back up your data
into a WINDOWS.OLD folder, and installs the OS clean.

You can buy Upgrade software or full Retail, and while in Windows,
run the Setup.exe from the disc, and Windows will do the Custom Install for you.

I've always been against upgrades... I've seen too many upgrades fail leaving the drive unusable. I say it's a good excuse to reload Windows. I'm certain you'd achieve better performance with a clean install over an upgrade.

Yes, until you click the "View Windows 7 Full Versions" button.
