this is what a currently have:
icore7 930 2.80GHZ/s, 3 sticks DDR3 1600, N460GTX, CrossFireX QPI 6.4GT/s, 850W power supply... was thinking about replacing the motherboard, case, and graphics card, but I don't know what to get in the way of a new motherboard and case.

Thats a great budget man!

If you go with say a skylake cpu/ z170 board you'll need to bump up to DDR4 ram, I'm not sure if the 1366 coolers are compatible though, lots of great options. where are you located so we can help you with options in the proper currency!

Southern cali in between la and san diego ill drive to either if the price is right. I think theres a frys electronics not to far from me also i dont mind ordering off newegg.

I built this one about 5 years ago for $1100 with mouse and keyboard so if im willing to spend $1000 again i might as well build a brand new one right?

I'm jealous bro, I'm in snowy Canada... :(

Building new or upgrading, either is good..but yah, after 5 years I don't doubt you want something new! And say if you don't need a mouse, keyboard..and possibly PSU as that 850W sounds like it would be fine, presuming you've had no issues?

Do you plan on overclocking? If so, a K-series, 6th gen intel i5 or i7 would be perfect. I used to be all over the Asus motherboards, but sound of the Gaming series Z170 boards from MSI are packed with features. The Z170 Gaming 5 is a awesome board and my cousin uses one-- its pretty solid and priced well.

As for a GPU, I use a GTX980, which isnt cheap but its rock solid and plays all my games at high+ settings with solid FPS some of the folks on here will also recommend a R9 380 + for a high level of performance at a more cost effective price point.

well the reason for upgrading is because before I left it for a deployment last year it wasn't taken care of very well and it collected A LOT of dust, but by the time I was able to turn in back on.. PC would start up but I wouldn't get anything on the monitor(yes the monitor was plugged in) also my buddy tried to see what was wrong and we both thought up it could be the old power supply(700W) that was 5years of age not being able to power the GPU or it could be that there's just so much dust caked on this thing that it was causing something to short. So I ended up buying the 850W and now I'm just looking at it like this is a mess I might as well replace/upgrade what I need to.

I may mess around with overclocking like I did with my i7 930 but it wasn't necessary at the time.

the Z170 series and GTX980 sounds awesome because gaming is what I'm mainly looking into, maybe a little bit of streaming but do you think I could fit that into a $1000 price range?

You can definitely hookup an MSI Z170 Gaming M7 board, intel i5 k series, and 16GB DDR4 ..at about $550 usd on Newegg. Add another $350 ish for a gtx970 .. you'll want a cpu cooler too, most likely .. a good air cooler..$40-50

If you reuse your case, psu, and drives..you got a solid machine man.. If you need new HDD or SSD those vary in price,.. obviously there are lower and higher configs.. but that gives you an idea.

cool thanks a lot man gonna go browse newegg with this info.

Really need a new case though as well but I've got the PSU and SSD/HDD set

think I might go with the gigabyte z170 its a little cheaper and the reviews say theres not much of a difference. opinion?
