Upgrading processor, old computer

I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 4700 PC. Instead of building a brand new computer, I would like to upgrade the parts that need to be upgraded. Really the only thing I see need upgrading on this machine is the processor, I've upgraded the hard drive, RAM, PSU, and video card and I'm still happy with it. Can I upgrade the processor on this machine? Can I just use an LGA 775 processor, I still have a 2.80ghz p4 processor and I'd like to upgrade. I don't have any of the paperwork on this PC anymore, so I do not know if this fairly old motherboard can support an LGA 775 processor. Anyone have any information on this computer's capabilities in that matter?

Thanks :).

well according to this the Dell Dimension 4700 does have a socket LGA775 processor,

but from what i can find out about the mobo in that system is that it only supports the following processors

Supported CPUs: Intel Pentium 4 processor 520, 530, 540, 550, 560, or 570 with HT Technology - Intel P4 that runs at 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8 GHz

so your pretty much stuffed if you would like a core 2 duo or something, the fastest processor you can get for that board is a P4 3.8 with HT.

You would need a new motherboard, you could pick up a P35 chipset motherboard dirt cheap now along with a nice core 2 duo or even quad.

Ah I see, that is sad :(. I guess I'll just build a computer from scratch, taking the motherboard out would pretty much require me re-building the computer right? I'm going to have to do this when I build mine, but this is a shared computer and this will be my first build. Don't want to risk it. Thank you for your response

naw man you said you upgraded every thing else all you would have to do is replace the mobo

replacing the mobo is so easy, the only hard bit on some motherboards is connecting those little power switch, power ligts and usb cables for the front of the case.

you could also sell your old mobo and cpu, people still buy P4s.

Don't I have to take everything out of the case though, and pretty much re-assemble the computer?

No, well, kinda, but not really, cd drives, hard drives, psu stay in, but you need to take out the ram and any expansion cards you have. Then you pop in the new mobo, ram, cpu, heatsink and connect everything and you'll be good to go(most likely will need a fresh install of winderz) Also, your sig aint anywhere near correct, its more like 50%.. well, united states at least(im part of the 50% that hasnt by the way;))

Why would you need a fresh install of windows? Does upgrading the mobo clear the hard drive or something?
Also, how would I find out whether or not my mobo is Micro ATX, or just regular ATX? And, yeah I thought the signature thing was a little off, I saw someone else with it, so I copied hehe.

To tell you the truth sell the old computer and build a new one, why spend money on old technology. You can build a new PC $500 that will outperform your old system.

What CPU/RAM/Video Processor/Motherboard specifics. Although, its probably not even close to worth it to upgrade it. For 400 bucks you can get a tower that will be loads better.
