upgrading processor or memory?

What will bring greater bang for the buck on my desktop system?

Upgrading from an Intel i5 3.1Ghz processor to an Intel i7 3.4 GHz processor?

Or

Upgrading from 16GB memory to 32GB memory?

I have funds for one but not for both at this time.

Probably neither. What do you do with the computer? Gaming, video encoding, normal desktop 2D applications only? If you don't have an SSD, this will be a much better option than RAM or a CPU in your case unless you do video encoding.

As Oke said, it depends on what you're doing. If you do intensive stuff with your PC, I'd upgrade the processor and get an SSD.

As above, the application(s) you are using will give a better idea of which component will benefit the most.

Thank you for your responses.

The SSD option appears to be a better all around solution to what I wish to achieve.

I have had a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD since April 3rd. It has proven to meet my every expectation.

My sincere thanks to all who have guided me to the SSD technology. It is indeed an excellent addition to my desktop system.
