Upgrading RAM and Hard-Drive for Sony VAIO PCV-2222

I have a old Sony VAIO PCV-2222 desktop I use to run my CNC machine and I am having problems running a program(mach 3). My current RAM is 256 mb which is about half of what the min. specs. for mach 3 are so I will upgrade my RAM which should be really easy with this computer. I'm having trouble understanding the Hard-drive and partitions on this computer. It says my total memory in drive C: is 15 GB(and min. for Mach 3 is 20 GB). However there is a Drive D: with 54 total GB and all but about 150 mb is free on that. So what is Drive D:? At first I thought it might be a recovery partition but it has no data on it so idk? Does this drive D: add to my total hardrive memory so I won't have to upgrade my hard-drive?

Even if I have to upgrade my Hard-drive, I'm having trouble finding a Harddrive for this computer(because its discontinued). So what determines what Hard-drive I can use with this computer If I do have to upgrade and how will I know it will be compatible with this computer?

Looks like what you have is an 80 gb hard drive partitioned into 2 drives. A drive that small shouldn't be partitioned at all really. Most likely its an IDE hard drive. Open the side of the case and you'll be able to tell what type it is. A wide flat ribbon cable means its an IDE, a smaller flat cable means its a sata connection.

I wouldn't actually spend any money on this machine as its quite old. It runs off the old ddr memory which can be costly these days. I would try to find an updated system that at least runs off the ddr2 ram. Find a custom built machine instead of a OEM store bought machine.

Ya, it has the wide ribbon cables. I'm going to do what you suggest and trash this computer and get a new custom built one. I have a buddy that will hook me up with one for a good price. Thanks for the advice and info.!
