Alright well a relative needs help with her eMachines W3107, her job requires she upgrades to at least 1-2GB of RAM. The machine has 512mb already and has two DIMM slots, can I place a 1gb with her current 512mb making it 1.5gb RAM? Or do they have to match, and if so do the speeds have to match, how can I figure out the speeds?

Thanks

Yep, you can chock in any DDR stick. If the speeds aren't identical, both sticks will run at the speed of the slower one. Size doesn't matter here since it's got socket 754 it doesn't support dual-channel anyways, you'll be good with a 1GB stick of DDR, make sure you don't buy SDRAM, DDR2, or DDR3.
