Upgrading RAM

I am trying to fix my friends laptop, a Compaq DN575A, which is just generally running slow. I have done MSCONFIG and got rid of all the unwanted/unneeded etc.

I think its a RAM issue, got Windows XP with 256mb RAM (although it only seems to recognise 192mb). It has an OK processor, an AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+.

What I would like to know:

The RAM in it says "PC2100S 256mb DDR". I have some spare sticks (2) that say "512mb 2xR16 PC2-4200S-44-12". So will the DDR2 RAM work in the computer that used to have DDR RAM in it...? As I'm sure going 192mb --> 1gb will work wonders. The are the same shape, amount of pins etc.

Can I just fit them (or just one) and see what happens or could I damage the computer (I'm not fussed about the RAM).

Thanks in advance, Doug

and even if it did, im not sure that 1 gig would exactly work wonders. performance is a combination of cpu, gpu, HDD, processor e.t.c. if you want to try and speed it up a bit try and defrag the hard drive. this should make a difference if it hasnt been done before (or recently)
