Upgrading Ram

Hi,

Got a question regarding upgrading ram. I have a friend that wants to upgrade his ram for his computer. I heard somewhere they aren't always compatible with the motherboard. Wondering if that is true.
IF it is true, the problem is he doesn't know what his motherboard is. Is there a way to find out?
I guess my questions are, do ram and motherboard need to be compatible? If yes, is there a way to find out what kind of motherboard he has?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Is his computer a store bought system like HP, compaq, dell, gateway, emachines, sony? or is it custom built? If its store bought just give us brand and model of computer. If its custom built the motherboard model will be listed near the PCI slots on the motherboard.

thanks for the reply! I believe it is custom built. I will take a look at his computer tonight. Will I be able to find out which rams to use from that?

Download CPU-Z. find out the motherboard model. Search for their spec to see what it support. It will also tell how much RAM it already got.
