Upgrading to new processor with no cooling included

I have an AMD 64 3500+ socket 939 processor and want to upgrade to a 3800+ X2 dual core. But the new processor doesn't come with any cooling equipment. Will my current heatsink work (and will I need to buy new thermal paste)?

it should work with your cpu because they both are socket 939 so it most likely will work but there is always a slight chance it won't so just try it

would you be willing at all to go with a new mobo and cpu so you could get a socket am2 if you want to stick with amd or go intel?

I thought of that route a while ago and it would include re-purchasing XP, and replacing almost every part.

You need to clean off the thermal paste you can buy cleaner to take that off and buy some decent thermal paste arctic silver is the best without thermal paste your new cpu will get fried. monitor the temps if it gets too hot it will knock it's self off so no damage can be done. I would buy a Zaleman cooler for it will make it far more quiet and allow over clocking but you may need to add a new backplate to your motherboard that comes with Zaleman coolers.
