upgrading to windows 7

My situation basically goes like this: I used a friend's copy of XP to put on my computer. When I tried to enter the validation code, I wasn't able to. So I was able to use it for 30 days until it expired. I then used the Windows 7 upgrade and now no longer have the expiried XP. So, since I didn't actually reformat my hardrive and install Windows 7 (I just did the upgrade), will my version of Windows 7 be a valid copy since my XP was not. Thanks for the help.

you can do a clean install with the upgrade version. just boot from the cd (put it in your dvd drive and restart)

You cannot upgrade from XP anyway, to upgrade only then Vista must be the existing OS.
So it will be a clean install, meaning all programs, data etc will be lost if it resides on the C: drive, everything will be overwritten and it won't be interested in your copy of XP. So if Windows 7 is a valid version then all will be OK as it will be this key only that it wants.
