Upgrading Video Card

I have this computer which I am trying to work with. It has a nvidia graphics card but then I found out the graphics card is 64 mb and I think now usually they are at least 1 gb right? I was wondering if I would be able to upgrade it? I remember learning here that if I needed a new video card I would probably need a new powersupply. Would I also need other new parts to upgrade it? Can I even upgrade the graphics card?

My computer is a Compaq Presario PC SR5608F so it is store bought.
 
It has integrated graphics that when needed will take more ram, and can sometimes be locked at a higher vram setting in the bios (i put this emachine at 256 cuz i try to game sometimes). There is no need for a gpu unless you want to try to game on it. Although that's gpu is about the same as my 7050, and it sucks, it messes up on youtube videos at 720p, but it's really spurratic, i probably just need to update my drivers (which i haven't in a while).

Yes, 1gb cards are usually the minimum now. You would need a new power supply but nothing else. You may want to install more memory if you only have 2gb installed right now.
 
Oh okay sorry I didn't mention I am using it for gaming which is why I was thinking of upgrading. But then I was also thinking how much that would be about and if I needed other parts upgraded. This is because before today I always thought the video card was decent and I thought it was at least 1gb or close to it but I was way off until I checked today. I wonder if I'll need to upgrade the processor as well. I was always under the impression that I would need to upgrade the motherboard as well or something or is that not correct?
The ram is I old kind DDR2 so I'm wondering if I upgrade the ram would I add more DDR2 ram? Or would I be able to put in some DDR3 ram? How will I know if it's supported?

How would I find out what would be compatible with my computer? Video cards, ram and all?

If you are going to be gaming, I would highly recommend just building a new system to your specs. Right now it looks like you have single core sempron at 2.7 ghz with an am2 socket. That is a dead socket right now. You really need a new system built. Sell this one to someone to regain some of the money back.
 
I was going to do that but since I don't really have time for intense gaming at the moment I didn't want to build a full on system yet.(Plus I'm never built my own system) I just wanted to upgrade this one. But if it's not able to be upgraded and the parts are dead that's fine too. I don't want to spend money upgrading if it's not going to work out in the end, that would be more of a let down.
 
It's really not worth upgrading this one. You really don't want to be wasting money on old/outdated technology. It's a store bought pc, you won't get that much better performance out of it. Even though you've never built one before we have many users here that have, including myself, that can help you step by step. It's actually very simple, a little time consuming on the first build but thats not bad idea. You want to make sure everything is right.
