OK i am doing my first upgrade on a buddies computer how do i back up all his stuff so when i upgrade it i don't lose it with out using a external drive how do i do it with the windows cd

urm, windows CD?
if he has more than 1 hard disk, transfer it all to the one your not upgrading, personally its a lot more simple to buy a external as they always come in handy anyway

Not gonna happen, you cannot backup your files to the windows cd, you need to back everything up to a flash drive/external/interal hdd that you are not installing windows to.
