My computer turns off in the middle of things for no reason
I cant game, otherwise my computer will turn off after 5minutes or so, Replying to threads comp may turn off, talking on msn comp may turn off etc.
ALWAYS turns off when i watch videos after 2minutes and always turns off if viewing websites etc after 20-25minutes. Itll make a weird noise as it turns off then i go to turn it back on and it wont start i have to wait 60-70seconds. The weird thing is though itll work Fine if i leave it on Overnight downloading as long as im not using it?
My question to u guys is what the fk is wrong with my computer? Is it the HD, RAM or the Power Supply Unit? I tried to test the Hard Drive and it always says "cannot complete Hard Drive check" however my gut feeling says its a Power Issue. But im not sure any help would be appreciated. I downloaded SpeedFan it says:
Temp 1 - 42C
Temp 2 - 85C
HD0 - 46C

Fan1: 2909RPM
Fan2:0RPM

Im guessing Fan2 is broken would this explain why my comp shuts off every 5-20mins?
Or does my computer just have 1 fan?
Im new to computers.
Also i think that loud noise is the fan straining itself but not sure.

Also CPU Usage says im using 30% when im not even doing anything? and when i make a thread to reply to a topic it goes to 100% wtf?
as well as that my computer is running very slow

Whats the Problem? PSU, Ram, HDD, Fan?

Ok, for starters you need to figure out what exacly Temp2 is. If its one of your CPU cores then thats your problem. Alternatively the next time it turns off instantly turn it back on and get into the bios (probably by pressing DEL). Then find the section that is the hardware monitor and it'll give you the cpu temperature.

Although going by some of the other problems you have described it might be possible that your cpu is on the way out...

if its the cpu do i just replace the cpu? or do i need to buy a whole new computer :(?
Ill post the BIOS up in a second

Ok BIOS:
CPU Warning - Disabled
System Temperature - 43c/99F
CPU Temperature - 81C/177F
CPU Fan Speed - 3245 RPM
System Fan Speed 0 RPM
Vcore - 1.26V
3.3v - 3.20v
+5v - 5.16v
+12v - 11.49v
-12v - -11.70v
Something i forgot to write down
Shutdown Temp - 85c/185F

Anyone know?

CPU temp is beyond high....even using stock cooler a old single core 2.4ghz San Diego never went above 50c.

So my guess is your thermal paste is old and crusty. So do this.

Buy Arctic Silver 5
Buy Isopropyl Alcohol
Buy Napkins

Take the Isopropyl Alcohol and dab a little on a napkin and clean in a circle motion on the CPU and Heat Sink...I usually keep doing this till I get nothing on the white napkin. This removes all the old thermal paste and will improve your temps with the new thermal paste.

Don't cheap it and use water....Vodka would work but make sure its dry before putting it in.

Isopropyl Alcohol dries almost immediately if you use small amounts so the risk is low for anyone with some brain cells.

Then take the AS5 and apply it with a PLASTIC BAGGIE over your finger...put the amount of a Uncooked grain of rice and make sure to put in as evenly as you can on the chip.

Hook the heat sink back on once you have done all above and see if temps are any better.

Personally I think this is the issue since those temps are crappy even if your using a stock P4-Athlon cooler.

Thanks, would that also explain why my computer is running so slow as well?
and is one of my Fans broken as its at 0?

Yes it could explain because to prevent heat damage (which 85F will be causing damage so try not to use the PC till you clean apply new paste/clean it) it will under volt and under clock itself to try and prevent damage.

Nah 0 usually means you have a unused fan connector. You can easily tell if your fans not running by turning on the PC and looking inside the case to be 100% sure.

I have 4 "0 RPM Fans" because most of my 120/140mm fans are molex vs 3-4 pin so only my CPU fan is connected to my board.

Alright thanks alot Twist
heh ive been using it for the past 3months doubt i can do any more damage!
unbearable when it constantly turns itself off heh
Final question the cpu will be attached to the motherboard right? (never opened a computer box up before lol) and where is the heat sink? Will the damage be permanent ive used it for 3 months while its been like this? and is Isopropyl Alcohol, Metholyn Spirits? Just a different name for it in America.

Hard to miss a heat sink...its a huge chunk of metal normally near the top of your PC right below the power supply.

Should look something like this
heatsink-cm-sock-a-a.jpg

The CPU will be under it and "latched" to the board. I would advise not removing the CPU at all and clean it where it is at to prevent any risk of damaging the pins of the CPU.

Beware and slowly and calmly take your heat sink off....thermal paste can be like glue at times so what I do is spin it left to right till it comes off. This is to avoid ripping the CPU out of its socket. This method has no risk to the CPU and works within 10-12 turns.

Also make sure your always "grounded" to prevent static electricity. I mostly put my foot on my mini fridge since its right by my PC.

Alright thanks alot Twist i brought the stuff, Waiting untill i find a laptop (for mum) before i attempt it incase i muck up and cant post here and get stuck :P

Did this + brought a new Power Supply Cord
has helped a bit but temps are still crazy

Temp1 - 39c
Temp2 - 76c
HD0 - 38c

Not bad 9c drop...so that was part of the problem.

Only other thought is after the AS5 you might want a better heatsink or a new fan for your current heatsink. Your heatsink does it blow air outward or does it blow air through the heatsink?

Are you using a single core or dual core CPU ? AMD or Intel? Also is your PC like a e-machine-Dell-HP-Compaq? If so whats the model number and what have you added to it for parts?

Also when you test temps is your PC case side on or off? If its on take it off and see if another issue is poor air flow in your case. If you have a very small box fan sort of blow towards the PC but not directly inside it can slow the fans down if you do that. Think light breeze.

Small mini towers can increase temps 10c or more.....now this wont be a 100% fix BUT it might drop your temps more so you can use it while you wait for a new cooler.

Another thing that can slow your PC is overheating of your north or south bridge chipsets...when the PC is on you can touch the heatsink and if its to hot to leave your finger on it you can take some 80mm fans and have them blow directly on it.
Can find the chipsets most commonly RIGHT under the CPU heatsink and at the bottom of the board (both will have small heatsinks on them)

When your PC is stable again you might also want to run Spybot and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in SAFE MODE to see if you have any crap on your PC....both are free programs. (for your 30% in use question/problem)

How dusty was your case when you were in it? Hopefully you took some compressed air to it and cleaned off the fans and such as that could be part of the problem as well.
