".url" file type - a virus infection???

I started having problems about a month or two ago whenever I tried to download and save attachments to email messages that I received. A file type of ".url" is automatically attached to the filename each time I save a download file to my hard disk. I don't know what this ".url" file type extension is, where it came from, or why it is being attached to every one of my downloads. And after I've completed the save action, the file I just saved does not open on my computer, instead I receive a popup window with a message the says "Internet Shortcut cannot be opened brecause failed to run".

What's this all about? Is it a virus, spybot, or other malware? I've seen some information that it is subject to virus infection.

How can I avoid this ".url" file extension, and the loss/non-accessibility of the information that I thought I just sucessfully saved?

Generally, this file extension won't show up even if showing file extensions is the default setting on the system. A number of different browsers will attempt to capture this file extensions depending on which browser you set as your system default. To see the contents of a URL file open a text editor and drag the file from explorer onto the open text editor window. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension. ..

Well personally it doesn't look as an infection to me, but of course we need to check it up.

  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Here's my logfile. Sure look's like a lot of "stuff" to me. Any thing you see that may be causing a problem?

I haven't found the problem, I would like to look deeper.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
