Usb 2.0

How do you know? You look on the back or front of your PC to see if there are any USB 2.0 Ports. If there isn't then you can buy a PCI card for USB and plug it into the computer.

I have USB ports. I don't think that makes them 2.0 by default, otherwise why use the designation 2.0. The USB ports on my computer are not labeled 2.0, or anything else for that matter. Does a 2.0 port look like a regular USB port? If so, then that takes me back to my original question. If not, then what does a USB 2.0 port look like? -

Control Panel- System- Hardware- Device Mananger, look under USB and look for USB 2.0 Root Hub and USB Enhanced Controller

How would that show if its 1.0,1.1, or 2.0?

I would do what stranglehold said.

I went to USB in device manager. I see a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, 4 USB Universal Host Controllers, and 5 USB Root Hubs. Nothing reads 2.0. So I'm guessing I don't have it. I'd like to. Do I need software, hardware, or both?

2.0 looks different then 1.x.

How is it different? It couldn't be too dissimilar, since the same device has to fit into both ports. If there is an easy way to tell just by looking at the ports, that would be extremely helpful.

Another way would be to just plug in a USB 2.0 device into one of the ports. If you are using XP SP1 or greater, it will tell you if it's in a USB 1.1 port

Other than that you could check your motherboard specs - i'm sure either the manufacturer's website or google would tell you.

So all I need is new PCI card? The highspeed one from tigerdirect doesn't have the ports in the same alignment as my computer. Currently I have 2 in the front and 2 in the back.

Do I need to check if I have the space for a 2.0 PCI card?
Do I need to remove the old PCI card?
Is it possible to keep the existing ports and upgrade them to 2.0 (preferred)?

Sorry about all the questions. I don't know what I'm doing.

They look exactly the same.
No they dont, its hard to explain but if you loko "inside" the port where the plug actulyl goes into you can tell the difference, look at both you will see, if you dont have both look at them though the package in a store.

I dont have any around me, but i canot tell the difference between the 2 just my looking at it. There may be a difference if you look very closely, but nothing that its really noticable.

you keep the ones you have, there built in, you just shut down, pop the side off, find a empty PCI slot, pop it in,screw down. boot up, there should be a drivers cd with the card, and you still can use your old USB too! You can get them at Office Max,Office Depo,Circuit City even Wall-Mart, Ha
