First of all I would like to apologize if this thread is in the wrong section, however I did not know weather to put this under the Mobo section or this section, but I figured that this is more suitable for my situation. I am still fairly new to this forum, so bear with me please.
With that being said, I received an external HD for Christmas (http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Port...1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1362457284&sr=8-2&keywords=WD). I was even more excited about the present when I found out that it is USB 3.0 compatible. I do have a USB 3.0 accessible mobo (ASROCK 970 Extreme3).
However when I tested the write speeds when attempting to move files from my HDD to my External, I was topping at 40 mb/s. This is unusual because I saw that the higher write speeds for USB 3.0 sits around 120 mb/s. I downloaded the latest USB 3.0 drivers for my mobo (from http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=970 Extreme3&o=All). I do, on the other hand, have a fairly old HDD. Could that be bottle-necking the External HD's transfer rate? Or should I try replacing the cord? Any feedback is welcome and appreciated.
