USB Device Not Recognized Problem

Re: Acer 4230 Laptop w/ XP Pro

I recently lost the connectivity of my HP 3050 printer and my Logitech wired USB mouse to the computer; They are both new - bought this spring and worked fine until a couple weeks ago. Now I get a message “ USB Device Not Recognized “ and referenced to an “ unknown device “. I tried re-running the printer installation disk but it wouldn’t proceed saying that everything was already installed. I checked the Control Panel and it showed the printer as installed but I found nothing for the mouse other than for the built in touch pad. I tried turning off and unplugging and restarting the computer but to no avail. I think it has something to do with the ports or drivers but I’m not savvy on how to check ,configure or fix that stuff. The computer has 4 USB slots and I’ve tried all of them but to no avail. The print jobs fail and I have to use the (partly damaged) wore out touch pad for input which doesn’t work very well anymore. Any ideas on how to fix this or am I doomed to taking it to a repair shop ?

Thanks for any help.

Are there any errors in device manager pertaining to the usb ports? It may help to uninstall all the entries under usb and reboot the system. However, most of the time, the only real solution to this problem is reinstalling the operating system? Have you tried doing a system restore back to a day when the usb's were working?
